Human Rights
Article 1 of each Covenant states that the right to self-determination is universal and calls upon States to promote the realization of that right and to respect it.
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of oneness.
This article thus defines the basic assumptions of the Declaration: that the right to liberty and equality is our birth-right and cannot be alienated.
Our Mission
...to respect, to protect and to fulfil human rights.
The obligation to respect means that States must refrain from interfering with or curtailing the enjoyment of human rights. The obligation to protect requires States to protect individuals and groups against human rights abuses. The obligation to fulfil means that States must take positive action to facilitate the enjoyment of basic human rights.

Article 2:
which states out the basic principle of equality and non-discrimination, as regards to the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, forbids ‘distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status’.
